Nvidia RTX Spark shows gaming promise
Hands-on at Gamescom 2026 reveals strong gaming performance but price remains a concern.
At Gamescom 2026, a new name in PC gaming hardware was quietly proving itself on the show floor. Nvidia's RTX Spark, an ARM-based superchip announced at Computex in May, is designed primarily for Windows on ARM laptops and compact PCs, with a focus on AI and creative workloads. But a hands-on demo suggested it might also have serious gaming credentials.
Hands-on with the HP OmniBook Ultra 16
The demo unit was the HP OmniBook Ultra 16, one of the first laptops to feature the chip. It was running Borderlands 4, a title that notoriously struggled at launch. According to the reporter, the game ran at an incredible frame rate, clearly above 60 frames per second, with the help of Nvidia's Frame Generation x2 technology.
Frame Generation has often been criticized with the 'fake frames' nickname, but the reporter noted that input delay and overall latency were not an issue on the RTX Spark system, offering a counterpoint to that criticism.
Other games at the booth
The hands-on time was limited to that single game, but other RTX Spark laptops at Nvidia's booth were running titles like 007 First Light and Arc Raiders, both of which reportedly ran at smooth, solid frame rates. This suggests the chip's gaming performance extends beyond a single optimized demo.
Potential for handhelds
Speaking with Nvidia staff at Gamescom, the reporter asked whether the RTX Spark was intended for handheld gaming PCs. Nvidia made clear it is completely open to any handheld manufacturer reaching out to use the superchip. This is notable given Nvidia's history in handhelds, including the Nintendo Switch 2's use of the Tegra T239 processor with DLSS support.
The reporter noted that DLSS on a device like a Legion Go or MSI Claw, which typically use AMD or Intel processors, would be "untouchable." However, performance must be balanced with battery life and power usage, a tricky equation.
Price concerns
The reporter's main concern is price. They hope for something not too expensive, but acknowledge that may be wishful thinking due to the nature of these devices and the ongoing RAM crisis. High memory costs could push RTX Spark laptops into a premium price bracket, potentially limiting their adoption despite strong performance.
Why it matters
The RTX Spark's gaming performance at Gamescom suggests that ARM-based Windows laptops with serious gaming capability are becoming a reality. If Nvidia can price the chip competitively, it could pressure AMD and Intel in the mobile market. And if handheld manufacturers take Nvidia up on its open invitation, the next generation of gaming handhelds could feature DLSS as a core technology, changing the landscape of portable gaming. However, these outcomes depend on pricing and manufacturer interest, which remain uncertain.
