SteamBoy mod turns Steam Deck into retro Game Boy-style handheld

A modder known as PhyFawkes has shoved the guts of a Steam Deck into a 3D-printed case styled after the classic Game Boy, and the internet is taking notice. The so-called 'SteamBoy' is a work in progress — the screen doesn't function yet — but the project has generated a wave of enthusiasm on Reddit, with some gamers already saying they'd pay for something like it.

A clever bit of modding

Steam Deck HQ spotted the project, and it's been picked up by VideoCardz. PhyFawkes posted the build on Reddit, showing how the handheld's motherboard, controller, buttons, speakers, and battery were transplanted into a case that the maker says matches the dimensions of an original Game Boy, with a thickness of 32mm.

The battery is the original battery, and it takes up nearly the entire width of the device on the inside, sandwiched between the motherboard and the display. The motherboard and controller boards are completely intact, according to PhyFawkes.

Screen still not functional

The only non-working part is the screen. PhyFawkes has demonstrated the device running on an external monitor, but the internal display remains dark. The issue, as the Redditor explains, is that the motherboard firmware reports display properties directly to SteamOS, so the firmware details must be updated with the new screen's information. PhyFawkes says it hopefully won't take too long to sort out.

Also missing are the trigger buttons. PhyFawkes notes they might be able to add them eventually, but space constraints inside the case could make that too tricky.

Fans already want one

The reception has been glowing. One Reddit commenter wrote: "This is legitimately so cool. I would totally back something like this on Kickstarter." Another said: "Looks amazing! I'd probably buy 2 of these bad boys."

Such reactions suggest there may be a market for a retro-style handheld that runs SteamOS, even if building one yourself is far beyond the reach of most gamers.

What's next for the project

PhyFawkes says the device runs cool enough with some slight under-volting. The case is 3D-printed, and the Redditor plans to provide details on how to make one for those who want to attempt the build themselves.

Whether PhyFawkes will consider a Kickstarter or other commercial avenue is unclear, but given the interest, it's a possibility.
