Why Lexar's ultrathin SSD raises port concerns

At this year's IFA tech expo, gadget makers are vying to outdo each other with claims of lighter, thinner, and faster devices. Among the usual fanfare, the Lexar Muse portable SSD has captured attention not just for its record-breaking thinness but for a design choice that may give some users pause.
A credit-card-sized drive
The Lexar Muse measures a mere 1mm (0.04 inches) at its thinnest points around the edges, and 3.8mm (0.15 inches) at its thickest point in the middle. That makes it the thinnest portable SSD on the market, according to Lexar. Its dimensions are reminiscent of a credit card, and Lexar is keen to promote its use strapped to the back of a MagSafe iPhone for on-the-go storage.
The drive's unibody metal enclosure is formed from a single piece of metal to minimize gaps and seams. Inside, space-saving measures include custom PCB architecture and high-density NAND stacking.
Magnetic connection instead of USB-C
The most unusual aspect is its connectivity. The Muse relies on a magnetic pogo-in connector on the back—there's no traditional USB-C port for plugging in an existing cable. Lexar includes a bespoke cable and a carry case that allows the drive to attach to the back of an iPhone or similar device. However, the magnetic connection may not be the most robust.
This design choice could limit compatibility and raise durability concerns. Users accustomed to standard cables may find the proprietary connector an inconvenience, and the magnetic attachment might not hold up well in all situations.
Speeds and storage options
The Lexar Muse offers read and write speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and 1,000MB/s respectively, which Lexar says is sufficient for 4K 120fps ProRes video on an iPhone. It will be available in 512GB and 1TB models.
