Microsoft 365 search outage linked to deployment bug
Microsoft is fixing a deployment issue causing search failures in Outlook, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
Microsoft is working to resolve an outage that is preventing some users from searching in several Microsoft 365 apps, including Outlook on the web, Outlook desktop, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive. The company has identified the root cause and is rolling out a fix, according to an incident report seen by BleepingComputer.
Deployment causes resource drain
The issue, tracked under incident ID MO1456424 in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, stems from a recent deployment that introduced a resource utilization inefficiency. Microsoft explained that the deployment led to excessive resource consumption, which degraded search functionality for affected users.
“Impact is specific to some users served through the affected infrastructure who are attempting to search for content in SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, or Outlook desktop,” the company said. “Our investigation identified that a recent deployment introduced a resource utilization inefficiency issue, leading to impact.”
Affected services and users
The outage is limited to users whose requests are routed through the impacted infrastructure. Microsoft has not yet disclosed which geographic regions are affected, but the company tagged the issue as an incident, a designation typically used for critical service problems with noticeable user impact.
Users experiencing the problem may see errors or delays when attempting to search for emails, documents, or other content across the affected apps. The company has not detailed specific error messages or workarounds for users.
Fix deployed to ease pressure
Microsoft says it has already developed a fix and deployed it to reduce resource pressure and restore service for all affected users. The company is continuing to monitor the rollout to ensure the issue is fully resolved.
While the company has not provided a timeline for full recovery, the deployment of the fix suggests that service should be restored gradually as the resource inefficiency is mitigated.
Recent history of search issues
This is not the first time Microsoft has dealt with search-related problems in its productivity suite. Last year, the company mitigated similar incidents that broke file search for OneDrive, Outlook on the web, and SharePoint Online users, according to BleepingComputer.
These recurring issues highlight the complexity of maintaining search infrastructure across multiple cloud services that handle vast amounts of user data.
Broader outage context
The search outage comes after a series of other service disruptions at Microsoft. In July, the company addressed a massive outage that took down Azure and Microsoft 365 services for users in North America. That incident was caused by a bug in its automated network maintenance request system, which removed IP routes from more devices than intended.
On Monday, Microsoft resolved another incident that brought down GitHub, its website, the API, and many other services for more than eight hours. Users reported server errors when trying to access GitHub, while others encountered problems loading commits, repositories, and Pull Request pages.
These incidents, while separate, underscore the operational challenges Microsoft faces in maintaining the reliability of its cloud and developer platforms.
What it means for users
For businesses and individuals relying on Microsoft 365 for daily work, search is a critical function. When search fails, productivity suffers, and users may be unable to locate important emails, documents, or files. While Microsoft has deployed a fix, the recurrence of search issues in recent months suggests that these problems can be difficult to fully eradicate.
This incident could also raise questions about the resilience of Microsoft's cloud infrastructure, especially as organizations increasingly depend on these services for remote work and collaboration. Microsoft has not indicated any long-term changes to its deployment processes, but the frequency of these outages may prompt scrutiny from IT administrators and enterprise customers.
In the meantime, affected users should monitor the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for updates on the incident. Microsoft's prompt response in deploying a fix is a positive sign, but the full restoration of service is still pending.
